Greetings:
Good Afternoon family and friends, both here in person and virtually, as we stream this service LIVE to all those who knew Karen and the One-of-a-Kind woman she was, and I pray, after today, will continue to live on in each one of our hearts and lives, as an example of perseverance and kindness. My name is Ryan Roberts, and I had the extraordinary privilege of being married to Karen for over 27-years. For those of you who had not followed Karen over the course of the past Six-years, Karen has been fighting severe COPD. It was in fact, at the end of December 2017 and early January 2018 that we were unexpectantly introduced to this new reality when both of Karen’s Lungs collapsed, in the hospital, leading the doctors to putting Karen in the ICU on Life Support and putting her into a medically induced coma. It was following nearly a week of Karen being on Life Support that the doctors came to me and explained that they did not believe she was going to recover and asking me if it was OK to take her off of Life Support. It was a very difficult decision to make, but we agreed to removing Karen off of Life Support and begin the morning and memorial process; although no one asked Karen about her thoughts on the matter, as within moments of our making this final decision, Karen decided she was not done yet and continued her extraordinary fight.  The reality to Karen’s fight with COPD, yes because of her returning to smoking again after 30-years of being clean, was that each time she returned to the ICU and on a ventilator five additional times, that each time she returned home, Karen’s recovery time became longer and longer each time. It was this last stint in the ICU just a day after the 4th of July this year that Karen found herself in the ICU on a ventilator again, at the end of a nearly one month stent in the hospital, in which, upon her return home, she knew her time was coming to a close. It was Saturday, July 29th, and Karen and I got to spend the entire afternoon and early evening together continuing to monitor her declining recovery, when we talked about taking her back to the hospital and Karen declining until I represented her at our son’s play he was debuting his co-directing skills at the ENT Center here in the Springs on the show Cinderella that evening. Karen and I agreed that once I returned home we would seriously consider taking her back to the Hospital. It was that evening upon my return home that I found Karen died, she had ran out of oxygen and passed away.  This afternoon, we as a family, myself, Karen’s daughter Shannon, Karen’s son-in-law Brandon, and Karen’s son Levi will memorialize our wife, our Mom, our Grand-ma (aka “Baca” as the grandkids called her), and Mother-in-law, and to each one of you Karen’s family and friends. So please bear with us as each one of us emotionally navigate this very special time to Remember Karen.
